Trip Overview

Mera Peak Climbing offers the experience of passing through the silent Hinku Valley of Nepal before taking a climb above 6,000 meters. The journey starts with forest trekking to small mountain villages and later to the valley, mountains, and glaciers. From the top on a clear day, you can get a view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Kanchenjunga.

Mera Peak has more than one summit. Mera North stands at around 6,476 metres, while Mera Central reaches around 6,461 metres. Many guided climbing trips aim for Mera Central, so the intended summit should be confirmed when booking.

The proposed 20-day expedition will follow the lower route via Paiya and Pangom into the Hinku Valley. The trip will allow time to acclimatize, train, and wait for good weather conditions. This trek is ideal for well-prepared trekking enthusiasts who would like to venture into a Himalayan summit.

Why Choose This Package With Great Himalaya

Planning Mera Peak involves more than arranging lodge rooms and walking routes. You need the correct climbing permit, suitable equipment, a climbing guide, high camp support, and enough time to prepare for the summit. These arrangements should be clearly covered in your booking with Great Himalaya.

The trip route takes you to the mountain via the lower valleys first before taking you to the upper villages. The itinerary also includes rest days and climb practice prior to getting on the glacier. This allows for your body condition, equipment, and confidence to be checked before the summit attempt.

The schedule also has an extra mountain day and an additional flight day for buffers. This allows some room for the team in dealing with changes, even if extended delays might need extra days. Your final itinerary will have your guide assignment, porter number, equipment, meals, permits, and transportation.

More Information

Key details about guides, porters, accommodation, insurance, and weather conditions for your adventure

Mera Peak combines a long mountain trek with a guided snow and glacier climb. Most nights on the approach are spent in lodges, while the climbing section requires tents, warm equipment, and simpler camp facilities.

The trail heads away from roads, and thus is distant from medical help. Access to phones, internet, charging, and warm showers becomes less and less available as you climb higher. You should take with you all necessary medicines, batteries, and personal belongings.

The climbing plan must remain flexible. Weather, snow conditions, altitude symptoms, and the group’s pace can change the overnight stops or prevent a summit attempt.

How Difficult is Mera Peak Climbing?

Mera Peak Climbing is a demanding high-altitude trip. The main challenges are thin air, long walking days, cold conditions, glacier travel, and a summit day that may last more than ten hours.

The majority of these areas have a continuous snow walk, so the use of crampons, ropes, and ice axes is required. A steep area near the summit might require an extra rope depending on the situation.

Previous high-altitude trekking experience is helpful. First-time climbers need strong fitness, proper preparation, and enough supervised practice to use the equipment safely. Your experience should be reviewed before confirming the trip.

When is the Best Time for Mera Peak Climbing?

Spring and autumn are the main seasons for planning Mera Peak Climbing. April and May, along with October and November, are commonly preferred for the approach and climbing conditions.

Season General conditions Suitability

Season General conditions Suitability
Spring, March to May Warming lower trails, cold upper camps, possible fresh snow Good, especially April and May
Summer, June to August Rain, wet trails, cloud, and difficult travel conditions Less suitable
Autumn, September to November Improving visibility after the monsoon, with colder nights later Good, especially October and November
Winter, December to February Severe cold, shorter days, and possible heavy snow Requires greater experience and careful planning

Nepal Tourism Board identifies spring and autumn as the main visiting periods for Makalu Barun National Park. Summit conditions still need a separate weather assessment.

Weather and Temperature

The weather changes greatly between the lower villages and the upper mountain. A comfortable afternoon in the valley can be followed by freezing conditions at Khare or high camp.

Area Daytime conditions Night and early morning conditions
Paiya and Pangom Often mild during the main seasons Cool, with rain possible
Kothe and Thangnak Cool to cold, depending on sunshine and wind Cold, with freezing conditions possible
Khare Cold even when the sun is strong Commonly below freezing
Base camp and high camp Cold and exposed Well below freezing
Summit route Freezing conditions possible throughout the climb Severe cold before sunrise

Strong wind makes exposed sections feel much colder. Pack for freezing temperatures even when travelling in spring, and choose your sleeping bag and summit clothing with advice from the climbing team.

Mera Peak Climbing Elevation and Altitude

The trek starts at Kathmandu and exceeds 6,400 metres when attempting the summit. The overnight altitudes are important because your body needs time to acclimatize when sleeping at the increased altitude.

Location Approximate elevation
Kathmandu 1,400 m
Lukla 2,860 m
Paiya 2,730 m
Pangom 2,850 m
Kothe 3,600 m
Thangnak 4,350 m
Khare 5,000 m
Mera Base Camp 5,300 m
Mera High Camp 5,800 m
Mera Central 6,461 m
Mera North 6,476 m
Thuli Kharka 4,300 m
Zatrwa La 4,600 m

Camp elevations vary with the chosen site and glacier conditions. The final booking should identify the intended summit, while the guide decides whether conditions allow the team to reach it.

What Permits are Required for Mera Peak Climbing?

Mera Peak requires climbing permission as well as entry permission for the protected area used by the route. These are separate from your Nepal visa.

Mera Peak Climbing Permit

A climbing permit is required for Mera Peak. The published foreign-climber royalty for peaks below 6,500 metres is USD 350 in spring and USD 175 in autumn, winter, and summer. We confirm the applicable permit fee and any waste management deposit before providing your final quote.

Makalu Barun National Park Entry Permit

Approach via Hinku Valley will require permission for entry to Makalu Barun National Park. The entry fee has been mentioned by the Nepal Tourism Board as NPR 3,000 for tourists not from SAARC and NPR 1,500 for SAARC citizens.

Other Route Requirements

Make sure that any extra local permits or trekking permits are in line with the planned route. Never take it for granted that just because you have a permit for another Everest trek does not mean you have one for Mera Peak.

How Much Does Mera Peak Climbing Cost?

The total cost for Mera Peak Climbing depends upon the number of climbers in your team, travel time, chosen route, availability of a guide, and requirements of equipment. It also becomes more expensive compared to the short climbing service starting from Khare.

Accommodation During the Trek

The kind of accommodation available during the Mera Peak expedition is either in local lodges or in tented camps. The lower camps will be more equipped compared to the higher camps, which offer shelter in cold weather conditions in the mountains.

Lodge Accommodation in Lukla

You will be staying at a local lodge in Lukla for either resting before or after the trekking and climbing stages. Lodges provide better facilities than the tent camps found at higher altitudes.

Tented Camps Along the Route

Camping may be arranged in Mera Base Camp and Mera High Camp. The camping team will provide the necessary camping gear and set up the campsites. The exact arrangements may vary depending on availability and mountain conditions.

Facilities at Base Camp and High Camp

The facilities become simpler and simpler as you ascend in elevation. The facilities in Mera Base Camp and Mera High Camp include some basic facilities such as toilets, but there are no showers in these camps.

Sleeping Bags and Warmth

Bring your own sleeping bag suitable for cold mountain nights. Temperatures can drop significantly at higher elevations, so a warm sleeping bag is important for staying comfortable during overnight stays.

Hot Showers and Additional Charges

Hot showers may be available at some lower stops along the route, depending on the facilities provided at each location. These services usually require an additional payment and are not available at base camp or high camp.

Food and Meals During Mera Peak Climbing

The common food items served by the lodges include dal bhat, noodles, potatoes, rice, soup, eggs, porridge, and pancakes. The menu shrinks for lodges built at higher altitudes as transportation of food items is difficult.

Meals at the climbing camps depend on the supplies and cooking support carried by the team. Warm drinks, soups, and simple filling meals are useful when cold and altitude reduce your appetite.

Altitude Sickness and Trek Safety Tips

Altitude sickness is one of the main risks during Mera Peak Climbing because the route reaches above 6,000 metres. Good fitness cannot prevent it, although proper acclimatization, a slow pace, and rest days can reduce the risk.

Early symptoms may include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Unusual tiredness
  • Poor sleep
  • Loss of appetite

Tell your guide as soon as symptoms appear and do not continue higher until they improve. Follow all safety instructions around crevasses, ice, strong winds, and changing weather. Your guide may stop the climb or ask you to descend if your health or mountain conditions become unsafe.

How to Prepare and Train for Mera Peak Climbing

Start training a few months before leaving if you are inactive. Progressively train yourself to be able to cope with multiple days on the mountain instead of a single tough trek.

Useful preparation includes:

  • Long hill walks with a daypack.
  • Stair climbing and steady uphill exercise.
  • Cycling, jogging, or other endurance training.
  • Squats, step-ups, and other leg exercises.
  • Core and balance exercises.
  • Back-to-back hiking days.
  • Supervised practice with climbing equipment where available.

Work toward walking comfortably for six to eight hours on uneven ground. Test your footwear before departure, and confirm that your climbing boots fit the required crampons.

Transportation During Mera Peak Climbing

This package will offer you airport transfers and a domestic flight back to Kathmandu from Lukla. In peak trekking season, flights from Lukla can be taken from Manthali Airport, which requires a road transfer from Kathmandu.

Mountain flights depend on weather and visibility, so delays or cancellations are possible. Keep at least one extra day before your international departure in case the return flight is delayed.

Guide and Porter Services

The package contains a trekking guide and an NMA-certified climbing guide. They help with navigation, planning each day’s activities, practicing climbs, glacier walking, using ropes, and the final ascent. They also keep track of the weather, trails, and the well-being of the group members.

Porters carry the agreed baggage and climbing supplies during the journey. You carry a daypack with water, snacks, warm clothing, important documents, and other personal items needed during the day. The baggage limit will be provided before departure.

Is Travel Insurance Necessary for Mera Peak Climbing?

Select the policy that includes guided mountaineering over 6,400 meters. Normal trekking insurance coverage may not include the use of ropes, crampons, or ice axes.

Your policy should cover:

  • Summit height that is planned.
  • Instructional snow and ice climbing.
  • Emergency medical care.
  • Search and rescue when available.
  • Evacuation by helicopter.
  • Disruption of trip and related risk of cancellation.

Have the insurer verify the activity and altitude coverage in writing. Take your policy information and emergency contact number along, and give copies of the same to Great Himalaya before leaving.
